Born in Iowa in 1938, and a lawyer since 1963, Mr. Louden has combined being an effective advocate for his clients and a pioneer in a constructive approach to divorce. He recognizes that certain cases must go to trial and has litigated many cases, including major cases ultimately decided by the Connecticut Supreme Court. His fundamental belief, however, is that it generally does not make sense for two people who have been married for 10 or 20 or 50 years to attack each other in court—and especially when they have children. Throughout his career, he has negotiated, mediated and litigated cases in such a manner that family relationships have been preserved rather than irreparably torn apart.

A dean of Connecticut matrimonial lawyers, Mr. Louden has been listed in every edition of Best Lawyers in America (1983-2009), in a national publication among the top 88 matrimonial lawyers in the United States (1986), and in Connecticut Magazine (2007-2009) as one of the top 50 lawyers in Connecticut (of some 17,000).

Mr. Louden was president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (1991-1992). He has written and spoken on matrimonial law nationally and in Connecticut, been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut Law School (teaching the Family Law Seminar and Legal Profession), and on key committees of the American and Connecticut Bar Associations. A resident of West Hartford, Mr. Louden is married to a psychotherapist (who is also a clergywoman), and they are the parents of three children and grandparents of three lively grandsons.
