James F. Sullivan practices in the areas of personal injury, commercial, professional and product liability, employment, construction, municipal and land use litigation. He received his J.D. with Honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he was editor in chief of the Connecticut Law Review, and had received numerous academic awards. He received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Boston College, in its honors program, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and recipient of the Scholar of the College Award.
Upon graduation from Law School, Attorney Sullivan clerked for Justice Robert J. Callahan of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Attorney Sullivan has lectured and given seminars on trial practice, legal ethics, legal writing, and various aspects of civil litigation before a number of groups. Attorney Sullivan has published a number of articles in the field of civil litigation, products liability, corporate liability, and constitutional law in the Connecticut Bar Journal, The Law Tribune, ABA Litigation Monograms, and The Connecticut Lawyer. He has tried many cases to verdict or judgment. He is nationally certified in civil trial law.
Attorney Sullivan is active in a number of professional and civic organizations. He is treasurer of the Hartford County Bar Association and is chair of the Litigation and Professional Responsibility Committees. He is the past president of the University of Connecticut School of Law Alumni Association. He is a member of the Executive Committees of the Business Torts Section of the Connecticut Bar. Since 1993, he has been an Editorial Board Member of the Connecticut Bar Journal. He is a former member of the Common Council in the City of New Britain, where he was Chair of the Committee on Administration, Finance & Law. He was past Chairman of the Ethics Commission, City of New Britain, and represents political officials in government ethics related matters. He regularly represents attorneys before the Statewide Grievance Committee and in attorney presentment proceedings. He has represented several municipalities in complex litigation. He recently was appointed by the West Hartford Town Council to chair a task force on creating a master plan for creating a bicycle friendly town, which plan was ultimately adopted by the Town Council.
He is an active, nationally ranked, triathlete who was recognized as an All American by the United States Triathlon Association for 2009. He completed his second Ironman in Lake Placid, New York in July 2010 and was one of the top finishes from Connecticut. He is president of a local triathlon club that has over 150 members. He, his wife Elizabeth, and children Irene, Daniel and Grace live in West Hartford Connecticut.
